The Engineering Quad stands on historic ground where James Clerk Maxwell once carried out pioneering work that laid the foundations for modern physics. Today, this space has been thoughtfully transformed into a state-of-the-art learning environment — a home for creativity, experimentation, and collaboration.
Connecting the two floors of this modern underground facility is a striking helical staircase — a subtle nod to Photo 51, the iconic DNA image captured at King’s that won the Nobel Prize in 1962. Just like the breakthrough it symbolised, the space beneath the Engineering Quad is designed to connect disciplines, unlock potential, and support engineering for a better future.
Visible in the photo is one of the makerspaces in the Engineering Quad — where students prototype, test, and build ideas into action. This space will serve as an inspiring setting for many of the conference’s interactive sessions and workshops.
